ANYTHING that is …
ANYTHING that is physically removing bacteria from your teeth and gums will HELP (using a cloth or towel and rubbing) and is better than nothing at all, but a toothbrush and floss is best because it fits the shape of your teeth best to get rid of all the bugs and bacteria. Gum is good because it helps get your saliva flowing and cleans out sugar/food. Be sure to use sugar-free. Gum with xylitol actually helps make your teeth stronger! Do not use gum as a substitute for brushing though.
Careful–baking …
Careful–baking soda will make them really weak. If you don’t see they are getting whiter with it, switch back to a normal fluoride toothpaste to help make them strong. Talk to your dentist about bleach trays- they work great! But avoid paying extra for the purple light or zoom light- it’s just a way to make more money. The more bleach you use, the more sensitive your teeth will be! So use a sensitivity toothpaste and fluoride rinse to keep them strong and comfortable
The reason it’s …
The reason it’s normal to feel ‘weird’ is because your body is not used to it. If you do it daily and make it a habit, your gums will heal and tighten and it should feel fine after time.
Pale pink color = healthy. When gums are red and bleed it means your body is trying to fight against an infection. Bacteria gets under your gums and causes disease and your body increases it’s blood flow to fight back. Since there is more blood in the area, it appears red.
Brush/floss= removes bacteria

I had the same problem.
yeah- try a good quality toothbrush like Oral B or Sonicare. They cost extra, but they work fantastic! They do all the work for you! And they have small heads available
It’s AWESOME that …
It’s AWESOME that you are brushing and using mouth wash – that will help a lot!
It’s really important to also use floss or SOMETHING to get between your teeth and under your gums where the toothbrush and mouth wash can’t reach. If not, it can cause some major problems in the future.
See my reply above about other options for cleaning your gums– also, you can ask your hygienist or dentist for tips on other ways to clean those areas without having to deal with floss (though floss is best!
Flossing is tough …
Flossing is tough enough as it is, but especially with tight contacts!
You can purchase something like Superfloss at the store that is very strong and flat to get through easier. You could also try a floss threader and “thread” it through to avoid having to force it between a tight contact.
Bacteria can get under the gums and cause problems which is why we floss- to remove it. If flossing is too difficult, try other options like an oral irrigator (WaterPik) or interproximal brushes.

Really good video. He brings up two tips I’d never heard of: alternating your starting points (to avoid enamel abrasion and gum tearing), and shifting your jaw to the side to let the toothbrush get in past the jawbone. Very smart tips. Thank you very much for explaining everything in simple terms. Best wishes.
