How to get toddler to brush his teeth?

He’s nearly 2 and just refuses to have his teeth brushed, clamps his mouth shut and gets really upset. We gave him the brush himself and he just chews it. I’m aware that the more of a nightmare it is the less he’ll like it and I’m worried his little teeth with go bad!

Any suggestions, I’m sure I’m not the first mum to have this problem, lol!!

Get a new toothbrush and toddler toothpaste. Put him on as stool/chair in the background and let him watch you brush your teeth in a very exaggerated way, make it lots of fun. Than show him the new stuff and explain that its special and that it will allow him to brush his teeth just like mommy and daddy. Have him say grrr and clench his teeth and than brush the outside, than make another funny sound for the tongue etc.

If it doesn’t work completely the first time, be patient and work with him, you want him to see brushing his teeth as something enjoyable.

My son did that, the only way we got him to brush his teeth was to give him my toothbrush and let him do mine while I did his. Hopefully that will work for you! Good luck!

  4. my parents scared my little brother into it by telling her about germs in your mouth. they told him that him toothpaste & toothbrush were like superheros (they bought him a superman toothbrush) and when you brush your teeth its like fighting the bad guys (germs) and that if you didnt brush your teeth the bad guys would live in your mouth

  5. my daughter liked it being a little less formal… i got her a toothbrush that lights up and blinks colors and after getting the toothpaste all set up we’d turn off the light

her having her own lil personalized stuff helped too, like a spongebob cup holder for rinse cups, and those crayola colorful plastic floss thingies, and they make a mouthwash the same brand as the toothbrush where the cap lights up… she has her own little spot on the counter with a purple washcloth that everything is laid out on. it makes her feel more independent and "adult" i guess

ps, the lights stay on for as long as you’re supposed to brush/rinse for, so they know they can stop when the lights go out (probably should do it for longer but at this age you just gotta get them into it at first)

  7. My 2 1/2 yr old has always loved brushing. I buy her the Oral B brand training toothpaste that is flavored. She loves Dora and has Dora toothbrush. My only problem is she doesn’t brush well. She will eat the toothpaste off first then sort of brush. I brush mine at the same time and have her watch me and she’ll mimic what I am doing.

Just make it fun. Get him a new toothbrush w/a character that he likes on it. Get some toothpaste of his own that tastes good and he’ll love it!
